The Frankland River Plan - what's the big deal?

The Frankland River Plan - what's the big deal?

Frankland sits in one of the largest of Australia's wine regions, the Great Southern, which stretches from Frankland River in the north to Albany in the south, from Denmark in the east to Mt Barker and Porongurup in the west - an area covering close to 1,000 square kilometres of some of the most picturesque and unspoilt countryside in Western Australia.

The region was first planted to Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1967, and since that time the vineyards have grown to cover over 800 acres, with most of the major grape varieties represented.

Frankland is remote to say the least - just check out the map. It is a good 5 hour drive south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia (which is remote to start with!) and it has taken crazy, passionate producers much commitment and drive to forge this region into one of the most exciting for the production of premium cool climate wines. Our take is that Shiraz and Chardonnay from Frankland will soon be recognized for excellent varietal and regional characters - just wait and see!
