2010 Riesling ‘OD’
The Serious Stuff:
The 2010 Riesling 'OD' was sourced from the Frankland River vineyard. The grapes were picked three weeks before the rest of the Riesling block and the fruit selected for this wine showed floral aromatics and hints of citrus flavours. The grapes were hand harvested when the natural sugar levels were near 10 Baume and the acid was in good balance. The grapes were transported to the winery at night to preserve the delicate fruit aromas and only free run juice was used. The free run juice was put through a super cool ferment for 12 days and left to settle. The resulting wine has been made in an off-dry style which retains some of the natural fruit sugars in balance with the zesty mineral acidity. The resulting lower alcohol of the wine further heightens its refreshing character.

It's s riot of semi-sweet freshness and citrussy zing. Serious at the front, but there's a party going on out the back.
It's a Manic Germanic.
Did you know?
Riesling is a white grape variety which hails from the Rhine region in Germany. It is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery, almost perfumed, aromas as well as high acidity and persistent citrus flavours. It is used to make dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines. It is considered to be one of the noble varieties alongside other heavy hitters like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Riesling wines are varietally pure and wonderfully versatile.
It is the often maligned semi-sweet or ‘off dry’ style of Riesling that will lead us to enlightenment. Riesling was thrown to the wolves years ago and perceived as sweet, sickly muck, and some of it was. But there were always great wines being made and it has been left to Plan B to restore Riesling to its rightful place atop of the white wine hill; with an ‘off dry’ Riesling leading the charge. There is no more powerful example of how Plan B can outshine Plan A.
